Reporting an Incident

To report an information security problem, or even a potential problem, please contact the ITS HelpDesk at 831-459-4357 (HELP) as soon as possible so that we can record the incident (or potential incident) and ensure that it is resolved and documented. If no one is available to receive your report, you may contact the Information Security Team via the below web-form. Also be sure to inform your supervisor.

Any suspected theft of UCSC-related computing equipment should be reported to the UCSC Police Department (http://www2.ucsc.edu/police or 831-459-2231). Be sure to let them know if the stolen equipment contains any sensitive information. Local authorities should also be contacted if the incident occurred away from campus.

-----Information about lodging complaints:

Please remember, if you suspect a crime is being committed, you need to report it to the appropriate law enforcement agency (e.g., UCSC Police). This includes email threats against personal life or safety. ITS can only hold its users to its own policies for responsible use of its systems. It cannot get involved in law enforcement.

If you are complaining about SPAM from a user who is not on a ucsc.edu system, please send the complaint to the domain from which the message in question originated. To determine this, you will need to trace through the full header information. Usually, even if the headers have been forged, the information can be found in the 'Message-Id' or 'Received' fields. Obtaining full headers can be found at:

http://spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/19.html

When sending your complaint to us, please be sure to include relevant log entries, full headers (if email originating from a UCSC system), and a brief description of the problem. If all of this information is included, additional information should not be necessary. Sending us multiple examples of the same abuse will hamper our ability to deal with the situation quickly, not help us. Thank you!

-----Resolution of Complaints:

You will not receive a reply unless we need more information from you. Also, please realize that we cannot report back on any action taken against any UCSC students due to privacy issues.

Review UCSC's regulations which govern the appropriate use of UCSC's and University of California electronic communications resources at:
